Throughout the story, the readers see and understand the reason behind Gil and Ronald broken relationship. In this story, the author implies that when a father puts is love for is land before his son, their relation will suffer. Vanderheaghe explains his theme with the help of the characters traits, the setting and conflicts. The author develop the character of Gil as a father who love is land, is dominant and cold. During the story, Vanderheaghe demonstrates many times how much Gil adore is land and how important it is to him, for example: † To Gil it had all been beautiful. It was all he had ever wanted, to possess that place and those sights†(15). Gil is also a man who likes to be in control. He wants things to go his way even if it not is responsibility anymore. At one point in the story, Gil even interfere in his son life when he 2 tell him: ’’‘’No divorce, Ronald,† he repeatd. †No divorce. Don’t let that bitch break up the home place†Ã¢â‚¬ (16). Ronald relationship with is father is awful because his father is not only dominant with him but he is also really cold toward him. The best example of this coldness would be at the end when Gil says to Ronald: ‘’You’ve got no right to look down on me,’’(17). Vanderhaeghe use of conflict emphasises the problem between Gil and Ronald. In the story, the readers quickly understand that two of the major conflicts are between Gil and his son. To start off, Gil is a shame of his son because he never accepted his choice. To Gil everything his son is doing is wrong. Even when he got married Gil speculation was ‘’that is son married only to get his hands on land’’(14). The other main conflict in ‘’The Home Place’’ would be about the land because Ronald is not taking care of his father land, the way Gil would like. When Ronald says to his father that he would ‘’open a pit and peddle gravel to the Departement of highways by the yard’’(16) instead of using the land to grow wheat and carrots, Gil is disgust with his son’s idea. During the story, readers can see Ronald’s internal conflict. He feels like he is not important to his father and that he 3 will always come second to the land. That’s probably one of the reason why †All spring Ronald fired his huge, gasoline-laced bonfires of scrub oak and poplar’’(16). Destroying the land is the only way Ronald can use to get even with his father for making him feel that way. The details that Vanderhaeghe uses to describe the setting demonstrate the love that Gil has for his land. This story takes place mainly on the family land. The Home place is special to Gil â€Å"Situated in a valley’’ (14) and ‘’down by the river’’ (14). The home place also have a beautiful land that ‘’consisted of the original quarter Gil’s father had homesteaded, the pre-emption, and another 320 acres picked up cheap from a Finnish immigrant’’ (14). The farm is everything Gil ever wanted and a day away from all the beautiful sights the farm has to offer made Gil restless. Another important part of the setting is the broken fences Gil wanted to repair because ‘’the wires were rotten with rush’’ (17) and ‘’They were a disgrace’’ (14). The fact that Gil wants to repair the fences so badly makes the readers understand how attach he is to the land and how important the image of the farm is. Even dough the land is no longer his, he still wants to be proud of the land he gives to his son. In conclusion, the author made it clear that Gil would have given up anything for his land. He never had a relationship with it son, Ronald, because he was too preoccupied with the home place to give him any attention. Gil is also someone who needs to be in charge but Ronald still want against his wishes when he got married and started to destroy the land. Ronald’s father never had any respect for is son and that’s one of the reason why they were so many conflict between the two of them.

When looking for certain advertisements to categorize together, it was easy to see that many of them are somewhat similar depending on the product. Fragrance advertisements all look the same with any celebrity aiming to make a dollar has a fragrance line up and coming. When trying to evaluate which genre of advertising to choose to analyze, I decided upon weight loss program advertisements. This includes weight loss supplements and dieting programs and can even combine that with fitness programs that guarantee that people will get ripped bodies in just a matter of a few m onths. The many avenues for advertising include billboards, television, radio, mobile advertisements, online advertising and print advertisements in newspapers and magazines. When analyzing weight loss program advertisements, various products are marketed on virtually every avenue. The products range from crash diets and magic pills to lifestyle changing diets and workout regimens. For this genre, the marketing processes are all across the board, targeting a variety of people. As Americans, with obesity on the rise, many of these weight loss programs can appeal to a variety of different audiences. However, they are all effective in their own way, appealing to audiences of different ages and both male and female either for an instant weight loss change or one that is more gradual and requires discipline. One advertisement that I have seen rather frequently is one that appears in many celebrity gossip magazines. The product is NV and it promises the product buyer that a person can dro p one jean size in two weeks. The advertisement is endorsed by former Playboy bunny and ex-girlfriend of Hugh Hefner, Holly Madison. She can be categorized herself as a 30-something year old bombshell. Already thin, the advertisement shows Holly Madison heading to a grocery store in an already too tight shirt with a little bit of belly flab hanging out. In the advertisement, it has her own caption written stating that she looked awful in that picture and after using NV got her body back. She is then pictured looking slim and glamorous and the product is called one that acts fast and that it is one of Hollywood's secrets of the stars who need to lose weight immediately. The advertisement prominently displays Holly Madison's hot new body after using a weight loss product and also shows a smaller photo of the actual product. It advertises which major chain retailers that the product can be found and also gives a web address for those looking at the advertisement and says that a person may be able to try a bottle for free. While flipping through other magazines of this same type, celebrity gossip, the same advertisement can be found throughout. Some of them are single spreads and some are even a full three pages of full color advertisements showing the beauty and glamour of being able able to drop weight fast just like the celebrities do. Individuals within a society must recognize, acknowledge the validity of, and agree to abide by a law. In the debate over whether public safety is more important than civil rights in the United States of America (US), such questions about the nature of the law, the validity of laws, and the need for community security of the population must be addressed. In at least four instances, forming the basis of the thesis of this paper, the conflict between civil rights and laws enacted to promote national security is notable. In the light of democratic principles, is it justifiable to remove one person’s rights for the presumed greater good? At any given time, certain acts may be seen as immoral, or threatening to the greater good.

Chuck Berry and Teenage Culture in the 1950s Teenagers were a new species at the beginning of the 1950's. Before then, adolescents in America had traditionally gone to work to support their family or to start their own family as soon as they were old enough. However, the years of post-war prosperity and the expansion of suburbia provided teenagers (who were too young to remember the scarcities of the Depression and the war effort) with plenty of leisure time. At the same time, advances in technology made vinyl 45's cheap and easily accessible to both artists and listeners. White teenagers bought up pop hits coming off the Billboard 100, although many who were listening to black radio stations preferred rhythm and blues tunes which were always played by black performers. In fact rhythm and blues was pretty much used as a synonym for black music. Chuck Berry was one of the first black musicians to do well with a white audience. Because of his middle class background, his energetic performing style, and his youth-associated lyrics , Chuck Berry broke through the race barrier and became one of the first "rock stars." Berry became a representative of the teenage generation, even though he recorded his first single at the age of 29. His experience growing up, though he was almost 15 years older than many of his fans, was similar enough to the suburban experience that he could easily identify with the restless attitude of white middle class teens. Berry was "a city kid from St. Louis . . . not rooted in the rural past as were the country blues artists at Chess." (DeWitt, 140) The joys of fast cars, young love, and a rockin' beat that Berry prized as a teenager did not diminish with his age. Berry grew up around East St. Louis.
